Does God punish? Is He a vengeful God? Does He wait for us to make a mistake, so that He can harm us in some way? Or is He loving and patient, not wanting harm for anyone? 2 Peter 3:9 says “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” This verse tells us that He doesn’t want to anyone to suffer, but wants them to come to Him for protection. God is love, the healer and creator. Satan is hate, the bringer of suffering, and the destroyer.
Does God really punish, or does He simply withdraw His protection when we ignore Him? The Harvest Principle or Golden Rule states, that we will receive whatever we want for another. If we want harm or misfortune for another, we will receive the harm or misfortune. When we love God and bless others, we worship at the throne of God, and are blessed. When we hate or wish harm for others, we worship at the throne of Satan, and we suffer misfortune. Are we loving or hating? Are we blessings or harming. Are we at the throne of God, or are we giving ourselves to Satan?
Imagine that we are sinking in a sea of sin and destruction. Then Jesus comes in a boat, and says “Climb aboard, I’ll save you.” There will be some who will say, “No thanks, I don’t believe in boats. And anyway I can make it to shore on my own.” Yes, there are some who are that deluded or misguided.
On judgment day, Jesus will have to say to some, “Depart from me, I never knew you.” That means, not only that he never knew them, but that they never came to him and never knew him. They never gave themselves to him, nor asked him to forgive their sins and to live in them. They had made their bed with the one who comes to “steal, kill and destroy”, the one who “roams the land like a roaring lion, seeking whom he can devour”.
The saddest day for Christ was not on the cross. It is when he has to say to someone, “Depart from me. I never knew you.” Jesus said in John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
It is Satan who seeks to condemn us.
