UNTO US A SON IS GIVEN
Isaiah 9:6 “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”
Isaiah wrote these words approximately seven hundred years before Jesus was born. Most people understood these words as prophesying the coming of a Messiah, but since that generation died without having seen the Messiah, people began to doubt the words. Today we understand that this verse was telling us that a human child would be born in which the Son of God would be given for the salvation of mankind.
We not only understand the prophecy, but we, also, enjoy the salvation that it foretold. We think of Christmas as a joyous time, in which we received the Son of God as our promised Messiah, but was it all joy for God, too? I believe it was a bittersweet experience for God. I believe it was joyous for Him to see His plan put in motion, to see His forgiveness, healing, reconciliation, salvation and eternal life for man about to be offered to his creation. At the same time, He was sending His only begotten son into the hands of barbarians, that would beat him, whip him, humiliate him, and finally nail him to a cross until he died. We can give thanks, that His love for mankind was so strong, that it overcame the sacrifice He and His son would suffer.
Because of His great love for each one of us, we must never be lukewarm in our relationship with Him. We must love Him with all our heart, all our mind, all our soul, and all of our strength, just as His Son Commanded us. And we must love our neighbors as we love ourselves. God is love, and we must show our love in everything that we do – at Christmas and every day throughout the year.
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son, that those who believe in him should not perish, but have ever-lasting life.”
